- QUESTION: My older sister has had a cataract removed, and the doctor has told
- her the other eye is also becoming affected. She may need another operation
- soon. I am wondering if the same thing will happen to me soon as I am 9 years
- younger than she is. Where do cataracts come from, and are they something
- that every aging person must look forward to?
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: While more than a million cataracts are removed each year, it is no
- sure thing that every older American will eventually develop this fogging of
- the lens in the eye. The lens normally is a clear structure that permits the
- light to pass through, and helps to focus the light onto the retina in the
- back of the eye, permitting a clear image to form. The lens has an inner
- nuclear area, and an outer portion called the lens cortex. Both these
- elements are contained within a capsule, and any one of these three components
- may lose their transparency. In most cases, cataracts due to aging occur in
- the nucleus and cortex, while those that develop as the result of diabetes or
- the use of corticosteroids are found under the capsule on the back side of the
- lens. Of course injuries can cause opacities in any portion of the lens.
- Cataracts are not due to eyestrain, and recent studies indicate that vitamins,
- particularly Vitamin C, may retard or prevent their development.
